Description

The threshold system consisting of polyvinyl alcohol/methyl orange/chloral hydrate/sodium tetraborate developed for sterilization irradiation has proved suitable also for detecting heavy charged particles. Preliminary results are given for deuterons and alpha particles. The dose response characteristics have been measured, and the effect of dose rate has been studied in the range 1.2 to 1.2 x 104 Gy/s. The range of the ions within the detector material has been determined from the measured depth dose distribution. Good agreement with calculated values of range has been found. (author)
