Description
With the advent of new detector arrays generating high-fold coincidence data in useful quantities, high-spin γ-ray spectroscopy is on the threshold of major breakthroughs. New techniques for computer-aided analysis of γ-γ and γ-γ-γ coincidence data are presented. Interactive graphical analysis programs for detailed high-spin nuclear-structure studies can provide the user not only with the observed coincidence results, but also with expectations calculated from a proposed level scheme. This approach should considerably enhance our capabilities for detailed analysis, especially of higher-fold data sets. In order to illustrate the variety of interesting physics that can be expected from detailed spectroscopy with the new instruments, examples of results from a recent study of 157Ho are presented. For example, information on band-mixing interaction strengths and feeding patterns can be extracted in considerable detail, and may be important for studies of the transition from order to chaos in the nucleus. The design of 'TRIGAM', a new HPGe-detector array proposed to replace the 8π spectrometer at Chalk River, is also presented. (author)
