Atmospheric Kr85 pollution by nuclear energy

Description

The nuclear energy development will cause in 2000 a global atmospheric 85Kr pollution of 1 to 1.8 10-9 Ci/m3. Higher maxima can occur in the northern troposphere and in the neighborhood of reprocessing centers. The resulting doses are lower than M P D for population at risk and for genetic risk for the total population. The somatic risk for the total population considereing essentially the skin as the most exposed organ results in 4000 to 8000 victums especially in the densely populated world regions. Control techniques such as cryogenic distillation are cost-effective. The application in reprocessing centers influences the cost of the kWh by about 1%. The combined climatological effects of nuclear and chemical pollution demand further research. An optimal time schedule for application of retention is calculated and can be postponed if further reprocessing delays occur; 90% in 1980 and 99% in 1985 can stabilize the pollution. Risks of gaseous waste management are quantified for Belgain nuclear programmes. (author)
