Description

This paper describes experimental and numerical study of upward solidification of an aqueous sodium chloride solution filled in a packed bed of stainless steel beads. The changes of NaCl mass fraction distribution with time are calculated and compared with experimental result. The results show (1) temperature profiles are in good agreement between the calculation and the experiment and (2) the average NaCl mass fraction decreases steeply in the vicinity of the bottom cooling surface. The second result indicates that NaCl transportation by an advective flow induced by the volume expansion resulting from the phase transformation is important for numerical predictions. (author)
