Reduction of low-level radioactive waste at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant

Description

To reduce low-level radioactive waste volumes, Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant is employing supplemental radiation monitoring of waste streams and has initiated a pilot program for source segregation of waste in the work place. The major stream targeted for waste minimization efforts is combustible solid waste in bulk quantities. Segregation involves concentrating contamination into a smaller volume, thereby reducing controls on disposal of the larger uncontaminated portion
