Interaction of a laser pulse with a target. II. Photoionization of the ambient medium
Description
An investigation is made of the ionization of air by x rays emitted from a high-temperature region of the interaction between a laser pulse and a target. The role of the various ionization mechanisms is determined and it is found that at a distance of several centimeters from the target the degree of ionization of air reaches its maximum value when the pressure in the chamber is approx.0.1 Torr and the laser radiation intensity is approx.1013 W/cm2
