Cytogenetic studies following exposure to radiation

Description
It was the aim of the study to detect possible chromosomal damage caused by radiation in 40 subjects working at a building site located about 150 km from Chernobyl at the time of the reactor accident and thereafter. After their return to Austria 100 metaphases per subject (peripheral lymphocyte cultures) were analysed for chromosomal aberrations and compared with historical control data. Individual irradiation data were obtained by whole body counting of incorporated radionuclides and by physical dosimetry at the building site. No differences in the percentage of dicentric chromosomes and rings were detected between the exposed subjects and historical controls. A correlation between radiation exposure and dicentric chromosomes and/or rings could not be established. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
(orig.)Additional details
