Prospects for using gas turbines in HTGR nuclear power plants

Description

The possibility is considered of using gas-turbine helium closed cycle (GTCC) plants, made both in an one-circuit scheme or in a binary helium-water steam cycle, in a HTGRs. The results are given of assessments made regarding the choice and substantiation of reasonable layouts and cycles of GTCCs. The gas temperature effect at the reactor- and compressor inlets on the GTCC efficiency is considered. A one-circuit scheme is shown to be preferrable for a version with one intermediate cooling. The GTCC is found to operate reliably as a primary circuit of a combined steam-gas facility, its efficiency being capable of reaching 52%. Preliminary estimates are given of the sizes and weigths of turbines and heat exchangers, as well as a schematic layout of a model GTCC in a standard VGR-50 steam generator casing
