Marcoule leaves the all-nuclear

The industrial site of CEA-Marcoule at Bagnols-sur-Ceze (Gard, France) is one of the main laboratory of nuclear research in France. The last of the 3 G1, G2 and G3 reactors of the first generation was decommissioned in 1984. The Celestins 1 and 2 tritium production units will be decommissioned in 2005 and the Phenix reactor will follow in 2006. Since January 1, 1998 the dismantling phase is in progress and will last 30 years with the help of Cogema. The reconversion of the industrial activities of the site is in progress with the start-up of the Melox fuel production plant in 1995 (Cogema-Framatome) and the start-up of the Socodei-Centraco plant in 1999 specialized in the reprocessing of low level radioactive wastes.
