Coherency effects during precipitate growth in partially stabilized zirconias
Description
The microstructure development of a binary 9 Mg PSZ and a ternary 9 Mg 2Y PSZ were studied as a function of aging time at 1420 C. In both alloys it is found that (1) the precipitate morphology changes from that of an oblate spheroid to a kinked plate, and (2) the number of precipitate variants locally present decreases from three to one. It is caused by the presence of coherent matrix/precipitate interfaces and can be explained in both qualitative and quantitative terms using the linear elastic theory developed principally by Khachaturyan
