Current state of research and development at Japan Atomic Energy Agency

Description

This paper mainly introduces the future vision that Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) should aim for, strategies for its realization, and the main results of research and development in 2019. JAEA engages in a wide range of R&D and activities as follows; (1) R&D related to the measures for the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident, (2) R&D of fast reactors and advanced reactors, (3) R&D related to the reprocessing, fuel production, and the treatment/disposal of radioactive waste associated with the nuclear fuel cycle, (4) activities for demonstrating the decommissioning of 'Monju' and 'Fugen,' (5) technical support for nuclear safety regulatory administration and research for that purpose, (6) R&D for improving nuclear safety, and activities contributing to nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security, (7) basic research and human resource development related to nuclear power, and (8) strengthening collaboration with industry, academia and government, and activities to secure the trust of society.
