EPR study of free radicals produced in pyrrole by x-irradiation and tritium atom decay

Description

The formation of free radicals from pyrrole has been studied by EPR spectroscopy. Radicals were prepared by the radioactive decay of pyrrole-1-t and pyrrole-d4-1-t in matrices of pyrrole and pyrrole-d5, respectively, and by the x irradiation of pyrrole in a matrix of adamantane. In each case the radical formed by the addition of a hydrogen atom to C2 was obtained. The EPR parameters for the radical in adamantane were A(H2) =38.4 G (two protons), A(H3) =A(H5) =11.1 G, A(H4) =1.7 G, (A(N) =3.64 G, g=2.0030. INDO calculations suggest that the radical is best described as an allylic system strongly conjugated with the nitrogen atom
