Waste management practices and issues in developing countries - The case of Croatia

Description
Radioactive waste in Croatia is generated from various nuclear applications as well as from the Krsko NPP operation (a joint venture of Slovenia and Croatia). The national programme on radioactive waste management is aimed at establishing a new independent radiation protection and nuclear safety authority as well as the development of new legislation. The siting of a LLW/ILW repository in Croatia is one of the important steps in the whole radioactive waste management scheme. The concept of sub-regional disposal facility for the needs of the two countries is also under discussion. Faced with the needs for the establishment of an efficient waste management system for both radioactive and hazardous waste Croatia is trying to implement a new approach by developing a joint institutional infrastructure for both types of waste. The review of main activities, role of the institutions involved and some on-going projects which round up the present situation in the field of radioactive waste management in Croatia are presented.
