Description

It has been demonstrated recently by the author that the electric charge quantization is an intrinsic property of the Standard Model. It is shown here that this imposes a new consistency constraint on Grand Unified Theories. This could be used as a guiding principle to help pinpoint valid extensions of the Standard Model. It is shown that the SU(5) model of Georgi and Glashow does not satisfy this criterion while the SU(2)L direct-product SU(2)R direct-product SU(4)c model of Pati and Salam does. 15 refs
