Studies for optimizing the coil geometry of iron-free induction accelerators (betatrons)

  • 1. Friedrich-Schiller-Universitaet, Jena (German Democratic Republic). Radiologische Klinik

Description

Starting from the general aim to increase the intensity of the betatron electron beam essentially, the correlation between coil geometry and obtainable electron beam intensity has been studied on the air-coil betatron as an example. The magnetic fields have been calculated from the cylindrosymmetric vector potential for various coil configurations. The guide field of the betatron is plastically described by the stabilizing potential. Graphical determination of the maximum cross-section of the stability region provides information for an optimum choice of constructive parameters of the magnetic system. Good agreement has been observed between computational and experimental results. (author)
