Development of reference electrode using zirconium as electrode pole to measure electrochemical corrosion potential in high temperature pure water

Description
A new reference electrode using zirconium (Zr electrode) was developed for long term monitoring of electrochemical corrosion potential (ECP) of reactor structural materials in boiling water reactors (BWRs). ECPs of the Zr electrode were constant for 280-285 oC water containing dissolved hydrogen of 40 ppb and hydrogen peroxide 0 - 900ppb or dissolved oxygen 0 - 7000 ppb. ECPs of 316L stainless steel measured by using the Zr electrode were in good agreement with those measured by using a silver-silver chloride external reference electrode within ±0.03V. (author)
