Highlights: • Scientific legacy and private life of Nikolai Voshchinnikov (1951–2017) is outlined. • Nikolai's contribution to light scattering theory was mainly related to non-spherical particles, in particular, spheroids. • Numerous Nikolai's astronomical works were mostly studies of polarized cosmic radiation. This paper outlines the life and scientific legacy of Professor Nikolai Vasil'evich Voshchinnikov (1951–2017) who had many coauthors and friends among the JQSRT community.
