Annealing behaviour of irradiated HTGR fuel element at high temperature

Description

The relative release of some fission products, namely Kr-85, Cs-134 and Cs-137, due to annealing of irradiated HTGR spherical fuel elements containing TRISO coated particles was investigated at high temperatures simulating accident condition. The annealing was carried out at temperatures from 1500 C to 2500 C after preheating at 1250 C. The annealing time ranged from six hours up to 1000 hours. The relative release of fission products increased with time and / or temperature. The maximum release for Kr-85 occurred 2500 C after six hours, and for Cs-134 and Cs-137 occurred at 2400 C after six hours. The post annealing test showed that no Ag-110 remained in the microspheres and that most of the Cs-134 and Cs-137 were released from the spheres to the TRISO coating.3 figs, 6 tab
