The contribution of nuclear power in Taiwan
Description
As a consequence of extremely limited resources in the country, Taiwan's energy supply depends heavily on imported energy. One objective of the country's energy policy therefore is the diversification of the energy resources used in order to achieve continuity of supply. This mix includes nuclear power. The first of the six nuclear power plants currently in operation was commissioned in 1977. Two more nuclear generating units are under construction. In 2000, the plants contributed 23.6% to the electricity supply of the country. Their low generating costs also make them an important economic factor for Taiwan. (orig.)

Taiwans Energieversorgung ist aufgrund der geographischen Struktur des Landes und extrem begrenzter fossiler Energieressourcen zu einem hohen Anteil auf Energieimporte angewiesen. Die Diversifizierung der Energieversorgung ist daher ein Ziel der Energiepolitik. Dies schliesst die Nutzung der Kernenergie mit ein. Das erste von heute 6 betriebenen Kernkraftwerken wurde 1977 in Betrieb genommen. Zwei Kernkraftwerksbloecke sind in Bau. Diese Anlagen trugen im Jahr 2000 zu 23,6% der taiwanesischen Stromversorgung bei und sind mit ihren Erzeugungskosten ein wichtiger oekonomischer und stabilisierender Faktor der Stromversorgung des Landes.
