Mutation breeding of groundnuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Uganda

  • 1. Namulonge Research Station, Kampala (Uganda)

Description

In 1976, mutation breeding of groundnuts was carried out by irradiating the seeds of the Red Beauty (B1) variety with 1500 rad of fast neutrons or 20 krad of 60Co gamma rays. After initial selection, eight promising mutant lines were selected for further testing. In 1989, the mutants were evaluated at three locations and compared with their parent variety. The results obtained showed that seven of the mutant lines gave higher average yields than the parent variety. 2 refs, 1 tab
