Quality assessment of gamma spectrometric analysis of Pb-210 in environmental samples using certified reference materials

  • 1. Health Physics Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, Mumbai 400085 (India)

Description

This study was intended for quality assessment in determination of 210Pb by gamma spectrometry in environmental matrices. The efficiency of low energy gamma of 210Pb (46.5 keV) in environmental samples vary widely due to differences in matrix composition and geometry. Certified reference materials (CRUs) identical to analyte matrix is not available in most laboratories. Density correction factor using self-attenuation of gamma photon in CRU and sample matrix was used to calculate the correct efficiency. The method was employed for measurement of 210Pb in four IAEA CRUs (Soil-Sediment, Water, Phosphogypsum) and the results were satisfactory as per IAEA evaluation criteria. (author)
