LEP: Spin polarization produces accurate beam energies

Description

The beam energies in accelerators can be very precisely controlled by means of electron spin polarization. The method has been successfully applied in smaller storage rings and with degrees of polarization of 80-90%. Recent experiments at the LEP storage ring have shown that the method is also applicable there for beam energy calibration with a polarization ranging from 5 to 16%. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Mit Hilfe der Elektronen-Spin-Polarisation lassen sich die Strahlenenergien in Beschleunigern sehr praezise bestimmen. Diese Methode wird in kleineren Speicherringen und bei Polarisationsgraden von 80-90% erfolgreich angewandt. Jetzt gelang die Energieeichung nach diesem Prinzip auch am LEP- Speicherring bei einer Polarisation zwischen 5 und 16 Prozent. (orig.)
