e+e- annihilation at LEP using the OPAL detector

Description

In July 1989 the Large Electron Positron (LEP) colliding beam machine at CERN was commissioned. One month later, the first Z0 particle was observed by the OPAL detector. The OPAL experiment is described, and the physics highlights of this project are summarized. (6 figs., 26 refs.) (L.L.)
