Description

This paper reports on the construction of Building 10, a new Class 1 structure, located at the Fort Saint Vrain Nuclear generating station. This building was constructed to house new safety-related equipment for which space wax not available in the existing plant structure and to provide additional space for personnel offices and plant computer equipment. Building 10 is a cast-in-place concrete structure designed to resist the plant design basis earthquake and tornado. In conjunction with the construction of Building 10, a building known as the Walkover structure, was also constructed, which acts as a passageway between Building 10 and the existing plant structure. This building is a steel framed, vertical cantilever truss with cast-in-place floor and roof slabs and is enclosed with metal siding. The Walkover structure is also designed to resist the plant design basis earthquake and tornado. This paper presents a comparison of floor response spectra for the Walkover structure generated by the random vibration and the time history methods. The excellent agreement between the spectra generated by these two methods illustrated that the random vibration method is a cost-effective method to generate secondary floor response spectra
