Results from the CRAY X-MS on the CEA benchmark

Description
In this note, we present the results of the CEA benchmark on a CRAY X-MS and we compare them to the results of the same benchmark on a CRAY X-MP. The CRAY X-MS is a mini-super binary compatible with the CRAY X-MP, it uses the same system software (UNICOS and cft77). For all the programs, the numerical results are exactly the same on both machines. The X-MS is generally 8 times slower than the X-MP on our production code benchmarks. In vector mode, for long vectors, the X-MS is only 5 times slower than the X-MP but when indirect addressing is used the X-MS can be 20 times slower than the X-MP. (author)
Abstract (French)
Dans cette note, on presente les resultats du benchmark CEA sur le CRAY X-MS et on donne des elements de comparaisons avec le CRAY X-MP. Le CRAY X-MS est un ordinateur de la gamme mini- supercalculateur compatible au niveau binaire avec le CRAY X-MP et utilisant les memes logiciels de base que celui-ci (UNICOS, cft77). Les differents programmes utilises ont donne les memes resultats numeriques que sur un X-MP. En ce qui concerne les performances, le X-MS est typiquement 8 fois plus lent que le X-MP sur des applications proches de nos codes de production. Les performances relatives du X-MS sont les meilleures pour des codes vectoriels utilisant des vecteurs assez long (le X-MS est dans ce cas 5 fois plus lent que le X-MP) et sont les moins bonnes pour des codes qui utilisent l'adressage indirect (le X-MS est alors jusqu'a 20 fois plus lent que le X-MP).
