Antineutrinos in nuclear matter - evidence for strings

Description

What happens when a quark traverses matter. Incident neutrinos which strike a quark in a point-like manner have been used in these experiments. The two experiments reported here consisted of passing the same antineutrino wide band beam through BEBC, firstly, when it was filled with hydrogen and secondly, when it was filled with a neon-hydrogen mix. A consistent experimental picture has been obtained, depletion at low energy, little or no depletion at high energy, indicating the quark barely interacts in nuclear matter. Theories of strings (tubes of force) and the formation time for hadronisation are consistent with the data. (U.K.)
