Substance including highly radioactive waste and method for its production
Description
The highly radio-active waste solutions remaining after processing irradiated nuclear fuel elements (e.g. by the Purex process) can be taken to a final store in the solid state, where they are vitrified. It is proposed that the glass should be taken to the store in the form of granulated material, which is bedded in a matrix made of pure metal or of alloys. The metallic matrix containing the granulated material can be made into bodies which are covered by corrosion-resistant material (stainless steel, titanium, graphite, lead, aluminium or their alloys) and can be used as heat source (seawater distillation) or sources of radiation (sterilisation of food). The granulating process is described. Lead antimony zinc alloy (84%-12%-4%)is particularly suitable for the matrix. (UWI)

Die nach Aufarbeitung bestrahlten Kernbrennstoffe - z.B. nach dem Purex-Verfahren - verbleibenden hochradioaktiven Abfalloesungen lassen sich fuer die Endlagerung in einen festen Zustand ueberfuehren, indem sie verglast werden. Es wird nun vorgeschlagen, dieses Glas in Granalien zu ueberfuehren und diese in eine Matrix aus reinem Metall oder aus Legierungen einzubetten. Die die Granalien enthaltende metallische Matrix kann zu Koerpern geformt werden, die mit korrosionsbestaendigem Material ueberzogen (Edelstahl, Titan, Graphit, Blei, Aluminium oder deren Legierungen) als Waermequelle (Seewasserdestillation) oder Strahlungsquelle (Sterilisation von Nahrungsmitteln) eingesetzt werden kann. Der Granulierungsprozess wird beschrieben. Besonders geeignet als Matrix ist eine Blei-Antimon-Zinn-Legierung (84% - 12% - 4%). (UWI)Files
