The oblique rotator model of magnetic stars

Description

A model of an oblique rotator has been constructed for an upper main sequence star assuming the rotation is uniform and that the magnetic field is not axisymmetric with respect to the rotation axis. Interpreting the field in terms of an inclined magnetic dipole, it is found that as the angle between the rotation and dipole axes increases, the ratio central field/surface field decreases. Thus magnetic stars with a large angle between the rotation and dipole axes tend to have the larger surface fields. The computations fail to converge when the ratio of rotational to magnetic energy becomes large, but lies below the value relevant to most magnetic stars. This suggests that the results must be extrapolated with caution until more extensive computations are performed.
