Neutrinos, messengers of the invisible

  • 1. Laboratoire de Physique Nucleaire et des Hautes Energies, Universite de Paris (France)

Description

This book tells the history of neutrinos, from their theoretical prediction by Pauli in 1930 until more cent experiments of particle physics, and presents the place of neutrinos in the particle standard model. It describes the different neutrino sources (Sun, Earth, accelerators, nuclear reactors, supernovae...), gives an overview of the ways and devices with which neutrinos are detected, discusses the genesis of oscillations, the measurement or assessments of the mass of neutrinos. It presents the astrophysical approach to neutrinos. It also highlights always more precise current experiments which may help to solve some enigmas of contemporary physics such as the existence of sterile neutrinos, the destiny of antimatter, the origin of dark energy, or what is the black energy which causes the acceleration of the Universe
