Influence of initial microstructure on serrated phenomena in Alloy 718

Description

The effect of solution treated (ST) and aged microstructure (STA) on flow behaviour within DSA regime in Alloy 718 has been studied. Tensile tests were performed in the temperature and strain rate ranges of 473-973 K and 6.6 x 10-5 to 2.6 x 10-2 s-1 respectively. Serrations were seen up to 973K in ST alloys while in STA alloys they were seen only at temperature less than 873 K. Serrations were seen to be vanishing either with increase in temperature or strain rate. All types (A, B, C, D) of serrations were seen in ST specimens while predominantly type C or type B serrations were seen in STA specimens. An attempt has also been made in this paper to correlate the observations regarding the mechanical behaviour of this alloy in serrated yielding regime to the evolved deformation microstructure
