Status of the U.C. Irvine double beta decay experiment
Description
A cloud chamber experiment employing 82Se as a source has detected a double-beta-like signal corresponding to two-neutrino decay of 82Se with a half life of approximately 2 x 1019 yr., about an order of magnitude less than geochemical measurements. There is evidence that the apparatus successfully discriminates against uranium-series contamination, troublesome in earlier double beta experiments. Thorium-series contamination and neutron activation of 82Se have been ruled out as a cause of the signal. A search of the known radionuclides is underway to indentify any other contaminants that might be responsible. The single-electron and sum energy spectra are consistent with 82Se double beta decay, but needed improvements in resolution and statistics are underway. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
In einem Nebelkammer-Experiment mit 82Se-Quelle wurde ein doppelbeta-aehnliches Signal aufgezeichnet, das dem Zweineutrinozerfall von 82Se mit einer Halbwertzeit von ca. 2 x 1019 Jahren, d.h. eine Groessenordnung weniger als bei geochemischen Messungen, entspricht. Es gibt Anzeichen dafuer, dass der Apparat die Kontamination durch die Uranserie erfolgreich vermeidet, die in frueheren Doppelbeta-Experimenten stoerend wirkte. Kontamination durch die Thoriumserie und Neutronenaktivierung von 82Se konnten als Ursachen des Signals ausgeschlossen werden. Es wird eine Untersuchung der bekannten Radionuklide unternommen um andere moegliche Kontaminatoren zu identifizieren. Die Einzelelektron- und Summenenergiespektren vertragen sich mit dem 82Se-Doppelbetazerfall; es sind jedoch noch Verbesserungen hinsichtlich Aufloesung und Statistik durchzufuehren.
