Uranium-series geochronology: a review of its application to absolute age dating of archaeological deposits
Description
The potential of 'U-series geochronology' to problems in archaeology, especially as regards hominid palaeontology and the development of human civilization is examined. Archaeological sites commonly contain inorganically precipitated carbonates (travertines, tufas, concretions) which can often be dated by U-series techniques within the time range 5000 to 350,000 yr BP. These methods are described, the criteria which must be met in their use discussed, some of their problems and limitations defined and some recent applications to archaeological problems are reviewed
