Determination of 90 Sr at Ultrtrace Levels in Environmental Samples by ICP-MS

  • 1. Central Laboratory for Elemental and Isotopic Analysis, Atomic Energy Authority, Cairo (Egypt)

Description

A rapid method for extraction and determination of radionuclide 90Sr at ultra trace level by using extraction chromatography and high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) was developed, in natural water, aquatic plant and soil samples from Nile River and banks of Ismaylia canal in Egypt for the isobaric interference at m/z 90 for 90Sr determination (e.g. 90Zr+, 40Ar50Cr+, 36Ar54Fe+, 58Ni16O+2, 180Hf++, 180W++, etc.) the measurements were performed at medium mass resolution (m/δm=5000) under cold plasma conditions. The detection limits were 0.1 pgg-1 (0.5 Bqg-1), 0.04 pgg-1 (0.2 Bqg-1), and 3 pgL-1 (15 BqL-1) for the soil, the aquatic plant and the natural water samples, respectively, and 90Sr concentrations ranged from 0.11 to 0.54, from 0.52 to 1.66, and from 0.001 to 0.004 pgg-1 for the soil, the aquatic plant and the natural water samples, respectively. The recovery of 86Sr was determined with the developed analytical method in spiked soil, aquatic plant and natural water samples, in the ranged of 68-89, 70-88, 86-98%, respectively
