Report
Failure analysis of a flange construction, applied in a BWR containment
Creators
- 1. KEMA Nucleair, Arnhem (Netherlands)
Description
To carry out a probabilistic risk assessment it is important to know the failure load of constructions. From previous studies it appeared that flanges as part of the construction can be a measure for the failure. The failure limit is determined by means of a two-dimensional finite element method and by means of extrapolation of the design control. From the calculated results it appeared that the failure of the flanged construction is determined by the bending and the tension in the bolts. The failure load, calculated by the finite element method is considerably higher than the failure load, calculated according to the rules for installations under pressure
