Nomenclature - the stellar zoo
Description
This paper discusses the evolution of single stars from the main sequence through the various phases of their lives, leading to the formation of white dwarfs, neutron stars, supernova remnants and black holes. This evolution is drastically affected by the presence of a companion, in the case of binary stars. The various types of interaction are then considered, involving gas-flow, eclipses, X-ray emission, and effects on the angular momentum of the system, along with other associated phenomena. (U.K.)
