Therapy and prognosis of inflammatory breast cancer

A retrospective study was carried out in 31 patients with primary inflammatory breast cancer treated with various therapeutic concepts at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University of Cologne from January 1976-May 1985. The treatment results with the various therapeutic approaches were compared with the literature data and discussed. Inflammatory breast cancer is an exceedingly malignant cancer with a five-year survival rate of 13%. The best results with regard to the survival rate were attained with a multimodal therapy consisting of preoperative cytostatic treatment with adriamycin and cyclophosphamide according to the regimen of Salmon-Jones, followed by modified radical mastectomy and postoperative continuation of cytostatic treatment. This strategy was shown to be clearly superior to cytostatic treatment alone as well as to modified radical mastectomy after preoperative radiotherapy. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Bei 31 Patientinnen mit primaer inflammatorischem Mammakarzinom, von Januar 1976 bis Mai 1985 mit unterschiedlichen Therapiekonzepten an der Universitaets-Frauenklinik Koeln behandelt, wurden in einer retrospektiven Studie die Behandlungserfolge der unterschiedlichen Behandlungsansaetze verglichen und mit den Angaben aus der Literatur diskutiert. Das inflammatorische Mammakarzinom ist ein aeusserst boesartiger Krebs mit einer 5-Jahres-Ueberlebensquote von 13%. Die besten Erfolge hinsichtlich der Ueberlebensrate wurde mit einer multimodalen Therapie erzielt, bestehend aus einer praeoperativen Zytostase mit Adriamycin und Cyclophosphamid nach den Dosierungsrichtlinien von Salmon und Jones, gefolgt von einer modifiziert radikalen Mastektomie und postoperativer Fortfuehrung der Zytostase. Diese Strategie zeigte sich der alleinigen Zytostase sowie der modifiziert radikalen Mastektomie nach praeoperativer Strahlenbehandlung deutlich ueberlegen. (orig.)Additional details
