Universal rare earth - size dependence of Tc in Re-metal stabilized Sr-based 1-2-3 cuprates

Description

Single phase Tm1-xRExSr2Cu2.85Re0.15Oz hybrid compounds, where RE = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and Dy, have been characterized for their structural and superconducting properties. All the compounds crystallize in tetragonal (P4/mmm) structure. However, a small degree of orthorhombic distortion is found in all the superconducting samples. The Tc of hybrid compound [where the weighted average rare earth ionic radius (i.r.) is close to that of Ho (i.r.≅1.015 A, Tc = 41K) and Y (i.r. ≅ 1.019 A, Tc = 32K)) is relatively higher as compared to the Tc value of individual members. The Tc value of 41K for Ho in the hybrid compounds is nearly equal to the Tc value of (Y/Ho/Er) Sr2Cu2.85Re0.15Oz, which confirms the strong RE ionic size dependence of Tc. Magnetic moment of the RE ion is found to have no effect on structure and Tc. (author)
