Radiation protection expert advice in nuclear facility emergencies

Although the occurrence of emergencies in nuclear facilities is regarded to be extremely improbable, emergency provisions have been worked out to ensure quick actions for the protection of the environment and the population. An essential condition of a successful employment of such emergency provisions is safe knowledge of the nature and extent of the hazards and of the area involved, a knowledge which has to be based on measurement and computation. In the land of Bavaria, provisions have been taken to guarantee on-the-spot data acquisition by on-site measuring equipment and by automatic remote monitoring systems. Selection of appropriate measures is done by a body of radiation protection experts advising the local authorities in accordance with the data obtained from the measuring stations and taking into account additional data from the nuclear facility involved. This type of organisation proved to be successful in many exercises. (orig.)
