Description
Large-scale nuclear power of the future, based on fast reactors operating in a closed nuclear fuel cycle (NFC), can stop the growth in fossil fuel consumption, take up most of the increase in the electricity generation and solve the problem of energy supply for ensuring sustained evolution of the humankind, nonproliferation of nuclear weapons and improvement of the environment on the planet Earth. Such nuclear power will however prove to be socially acceptable when it satisfies to requirements of high safety and economic competitiveness with alternative sources of energy, with safety to be understood in this case in a broad sense of the word, specifically as: - no limits on fuel resources; - avoidance of dangerous accidents involving radioactive and toxic emissions to require evacuation of public and formation of exclusion areas; - technological strengthening of nonproliferation resistance; - environmentally safe closure of the fuel cycle in RW handling
