Critical potential for IGSCC of Type 304 stainless steel in high purity water at 250lt. slashC
Description
It has been proposed that intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) of sensitized austenitic stainless steel in oxygenated high purity high temperature water can be avoided by keeping the corrosion potential (Ecorr) below a certain electrode potential, i.e. a critical potential for IGSCC (Ecrit). Ecorr can be altered by changing the water chemistry, the main parameter being the oxygen content. Thus, one remedy for avoiding IGSCC of weld sensitized austenitic stainless steel piping in operating BWRs is to keep Ecorr below Ecrit by suppressing the oxygen content of the water. This can be accomplished by adding hydrogen to the feed-water
