PET imaging of breast carcinoma with 18FDG

Description
The authors have conducted this study to determine whether 18FDG accumulates enough into breast carcinomas to allow positron-emission tomography (PET). MCF7 human breast carcinoma cells were grown in vitro and incubated with varying concentrations of 18FDG in the presence or absence of excess unlabeled glucose. In two patients with newly diagnosed primary breast carcinoma, a dose of 10 mCi of 18FDG was given intravenously, and dynamic PET scans were obtained over 1 hour (Siemens eight-ring, whole-body PET scanner). Transverse images were correlated with physical examination and mammograms
