Shutting down of Indian Point, could the New-York state prevent load-shedding?
Description
Whereas problems of grid congestion and the high consumption of New-York city resulted in a load-shedding of thousands of consumers during the hottest hours, this article proposes a critical discussion of the shutting down of the Indian Point nuclear plant which used to be a pillar of electric power supply for the megalopolis. Thus, after a brief presentation of the role of this plant in the power supply of the city, it first outlines the relationship between climate change and the security of supply, highlights some aspects at stake for the New-York electric power networks, outlines the limitations of a prospective study, comments the impact of Indian Point shutting down on water resources (one of the reasons for the shutting down) and on the foot print of alternate production means. It finally briefly discusses the long term resilience of New-York in front of extreme climatic events
