Theory and simulation of a crossed field microwave device

Description
To undertake the task of modeling the operation of a crossed-field device, an approach based on the soliton concept and modifications thereof is used. Recent work has been directed toward predicting the voltage and current characteristics versus magnetic field. Recent experimental work at high magnetic field values has verified predictions of the soliton-based nonlinear electron device theory. In addition to theoretical work based on the soliton concept, the investigation into the operation of crossed-field devices has been extended to include computer simulations and modifications of linear theory. Two different avenues of investigation relative to modifications of linear theory are being pursued. The reason for undertaking this additional theoretical work is to verify some of the assumptions used in the soliton-based nonlinear theory. First, work on including the dependence of the variables in the cathode to anode direction is underway. Second, work on obtaining a better model for space charge flow in crossed fields is being pursued where comparisons are being made with the computer simulations. Recent results are presented
