Description
Adaptive-type response is known to be observed in mammalian cells pre-exposured to low doses of ionizing radiation. This adaptive-type response is analogous to the adaptive DNA-repair response of bacterial cells treated with non-toxic levels of alkylating agents and peroxides. Induction of adaptive-type response by low-level dose rate radiation was also observed in mammalian cells by whole-body exposure to X-rays. Induction of adaptive-type response in whole-body chronically gamma-irradiated mice and activation of the DNA-repair systems in their tissues was studied. Results showed that whole-body chronic pre-irradiation of mice with low dose rate of gamma-rays induced radio-adaptive response in tissues of these animals. (author). 11 refs., 4 figs
