Submillimeter spectral line observations in very dense regions

Description
The 5 m antenna of the MM-Wave Observatory at the University of Texas was used to scan the cores of M17, S140 and NGC 2024 in an attempt to detect high density regions featuring matter in freefall in a final star formation phase. The scans focused on CS (J = 7 yields 6), H2CO (J = 5(15) yields 4(14)) and HCN (j = 4 yields 3) transition line data which could be analyzed to find gas densities of over 1 million/cu cm. Combination of the highest excitation CS and H2CO lines indicated regions of densities over 10 million/cu cm, but with large uncertainties in the calculations. 8 references
