Fixation by vitrification of atypical liquid radioactive wastes

Description

Liquid radioactive wastes are mixed with formic acid. The mix is thickened and glass fritt in form of ballotine is added in the concentrate thus obtained. The thick mix is proportioned into a melting furnace. The advantages of the technique include lower abrasiveness of the mix, the possibility of vitrifying radioactive wastes with uranium, chromium, cadmium etc. The technique can be used to treat liquid radioactive wastes from nuclear power plants, research institutes, mining installations, etc. (E.S.)
