The overview of the security system of the storage facility for radioactive waste in Slovenia
Description
The Central storage facility for radioactive waste in Brinje is the only storage in Slovenia intended for radioactive waste from industrial, medical and research activities. The storage has been in operation since 1986, and since 1999 has been managed and operated by Agency for Radwaste Management - ARAO. As the new operator of the storage facility the ARAO has started immediately with planning and implementation of all activities for modernisation and refurbishment of the facility, including the renewal and upgrade security installations. In parallel ARAO also prepared several basic documents, procedures and instructions which were necessary to fulfil the legislative requirements. ARAO experts were aware that is not enough only to meet legislative commitments, so ARAO has been paying great attention to the security system of Central storage facility which became ARAO's permanent activity. The current security system was established by the ARAO in cooperation with external experts. ARAO was deeply aware that only the comprehensive work of experts from different fields can bring the satisfactory results. The trainings and workshops of the personnel involved in the security system have been periodically performed. Periodical tests of particular security systems have been performed as well. Only with this practice of trainings and tests ARAO can get indicators of the eventual defectiveness and problems in the system and on this basis the improvement and efficiency of applied security system have been and will be made. We are proud that since now we have not had any security related accidents in Central storage facility in Brinje. This paper gives an overview of the current security system of the Central storage facility for radioactive waste in Brinje. The overview involves the legislation framework, applicable documentation, organisational issues, and description of physical and technical protection, future plans and other activities regarding the security in Central storage facility.
