A batch process for direct conversion of organic oxygen and water to CO2 for 18O/16O analysis

Description
A new method for the determination of the 18O/16O ratio in cellulose has been developed. A batch of small nickel bombs containing cellulose samples with nickel catalyst powder is heated to 9500C for pyrolysis. The H2 formed diffuses through the nickel walls of the bombs, leaving a mixture of C, CO and CO2. After pyrolysis the batch is cooled to 3500C by which quantitative conversion to CO2 is obtained. The bombs are opened individually and the CO2 is purified and collected for mass-spectrometric analysis. The standard deviation for delta18O determinations is less than 0.02%. Water samples as small as 10 mg have been treated likewise. (author)
