Analyzing fuel bundle deformation using the finite element method

Description
Over the course of their operating life in a nuclear reactor, fuel elements in a CANDU fuel bundle deform due to thermal phenomena. Under transient conditions, the temperature gradients induced in the bundle exacerbate the extent of deformation such that the integrity of fuel and of the primary heat transport system may be compromised. As such, the interaction between the fuel elements and between the fuel elements and pressure tube is of critical interest. The objective of this work is to create a three-dimensional finite element model to analyze bundle deformation behaviour under transient conditions. (author)
