Description
A report is given of the activities of the USA in the field of food irradiation. The existing facilities and the dosimetric procedures are described including several new dosimeter systems. Chemical changes due to irradiation were studied in a lot of foodstuffs such as soybeans, shrimps, meat, and chicken-based pet food products as well as in model systems. Effects of irradiation on the content of Clostridium botulinum in foodstuffs were investigated. Studies in radicidation, radurization and the combination of ionizing radiation with UV, heat, or microwave treatment were performed. Radiopreservation was studied in a lot of foodstuffs. Extensive feeding studies were performed in rats, mice and dogs to assess the wholesomeness of irradiated beef, strawberries and papayas. Furthermore, a short review is given of the present legislation and clearances and the economics. (MG)

Der Artikel berichtet ueber die Arbeit der USA auf dem Gebiet der Lebensmittelbestrahlung. Die vorhandenen Einrichtungen und die dosimetrischen Verfahren einschliesslich einiger neuer Dosimetersysteme werden beschrieben. Chemische Veraenderungen durch Strahlung wurden an einer Reihe von Lebensmitteln wie Sojabohnen, Krabben, Fleisch und Tiernahrung auf Gefluegelbasis sowie in Modellsystemen untersucht. Daneben wurde die Wirkung von Strahlen auf Clostridium botulinum in Lebensmitteln untersucht. Untersuchungen ueber Radizidation, Radurisation und die Kombination von ionisierender Strahlung mit UV-, Waerme- oder Mikrowellenbehandlung wurden durchgefuehrt. Strahlenkonservierung wurde an einer Reihe von Lebensmitteln untersucht. An Ratten, Maeusen und Hunden wurden umfangreiche Fuetterungsexperimente durchgefuehrt, um die Bekoemmlichkeit von bestrahltem Rindfleisch, Erdbeeren und Papayas zu testen. Ausserdem wird ein kurzer Ueberblick ueber den augenblicklichen Stand der Gesetzgebung, Genehmigung und Wirtschaftlichkeit gegeben. (MG/AK)Additional details
